About backup policies for disaster recovery of SharePoint Server
To provide for full disaster recovery of SharePoint Server, you must create a farm-level backup and a Windows backup of certain file system components. The Windows backup should include the file system where SharePoint Web Parts can be installed and System State directive (Shadow Copy Components). A backup of the System State protects the IIS metadata.
You can create backup policies for disaster recovery of a SharePoint in one of following ways:
Create a policy and an policy. The first policy backs up the entire farm, but excludes the Index Files and Search databases from incremental backups. The second policy backs up the components that reside outside of SharePoint.

Optionally, you can create another policy if you want to back up the Index Files and Search databases more frequently.
Create two policies and an policy. One SharePoint policy backs up the entire farm and excludes the Index Files and Search from full and incremental backups. The other SharePoint policy backs up the Index Files and Search databases. The policy backs up the components that reside outside of SharePoint. This policy is optional. If a weekly full backup does not provide adequate protection, adjust the schedule accordingly. Ensure that Policy A and Policy C run at different times. Ideally these policies should run on different days. |
