About freeze mode in NetBackup

In certain scenarios, you can enable freeze mode to prevent users from making changes to NetBackup for security reasons. In freeze mode, you cannot change NetBackup configurations and cannot use certain functionality based on the freeze mode options that are configured.

It is recommended that organizations identify scenarios (for example, malware attack) when they need to enable freeze mode, beforehand.

Important notes
  • Freeze mode can be enabled only on primary servers.

  • After freeze mode is enabled, it is advised that you restrict users from accessing the primary server using shell and console.

  • Do not upgrade NetBackup primary server if freeze mode is enabled or the process is still in progress.

  • You must have Security Administrator permissions to enable and disable freeze mode.

  • On NetBackup hosts earlier than 10.0, freeze mode may not be fully supported and NetBackup operations may be affected.

Freeze mode is supported on primary servers with NetBackup version 11.1 or later.

  • You can enable multiperson authorization to enable and disable freeze mode, and edit freeze mode options. Ensure one or more MPA approvers are available in the given NetBackup domain.

  • If NetBackup catalog was backed up during freeze mode, restoring such catalog backup enables freeze mode on the NetBackup the primary server after catalog recovery.

If catalog backup was taken when freeze mode was not enabled and it was recovered during freeze mode, freeze mode is reset.

  • In Flex Scale web UI, the cluster management tab manages the Flex Scale cluster. Freeze mode in NetBackup does not impact cluster management operations. Freeze mode is applicable only for NetBackup operations. Underlying platform operations do not have any impact during freeze mode.
