About Continuous Data Protection (CDP)
Continuous Data Protection (CDP) is a data protection mechanism, also refers to backing up of data by automatically saving the copy of the data. The CDP mechanism allows the organization to recover from current or a point in time in the past which is known as Recovery Point. A Recovery Point is a point in time to which a volume can be reverted without any further processing of the data.
This feature in Resiliency Platform is introduced in version 3.5. You will have to upgrade your environment to avail the CDP functionality. The CDP support is mainly for remote recovery of data. You can configure CDP on source and target data centers, but the recovery points are created only on the target data center.
The CDP configuration is enabled only for 'Recovery to VMware virtual machines to on-premises data center using the Resiliency Platform Data Mover's recovery option.
Configuring the CDP for resiliency group (Enable CDP):
- Attach a blank disk to the Replication Gateway. If you want to configure CDP for source and target data center, attach a blank disk on both side of the Replication Gateways.
- Using the Klish option manage command, create CDP storage using the blank disk attached in step 1.
- While configuring the resiliency group, in the Replication Group pair selection page, check Enable Continuous Data Protection and provide CDP storage in percentage. Once checked, the CDP storage is created as part of step 1 is shown along with Replication Gateway Pairs.
When you upgrade the Resiliency Platform to version 3.5 and above, you can enable the CDP storage for the resiliency groups which already exist in the data center. You can also create a new resiliency group after you have upgraded to Resiliency Platform version 3.5 and above.
There are two ways to disable the CDP configuration.
Two step process to disable CDP at target datacenter (Recommended)
Step 1: Edit the resiliency group, navigate to the Select Replication Gateway pair wizard by clicking Next and set the target data center CDP storage in % to 0 % .Click Next and complete the edit resiliency group workflow.
You need to wait for the CDP Recovery Window column on the resiliency group details page to be 'Not available'. The rehearsal and cleanup rehearsal operations are blocked as the recovery point are getting applied.
Step 2: Again edit the resiliency group and uncheck the Enable Continuous Data Protection checkbox.
Uncheck the checkbox Enable Continuous Data Protection while editing the resiliency group.
By selecting this option, the disabling CDP process may take longer time as all the recovery points are applied. As the edit process is in progress, no other operation is allowed.
