Prerequisites for configuring VMware virtual machines for recovery using NetBackup images
Before you run the wizard to manage VMware virtual machines for remote recovery using NetBackup images, ensure that you have met the following prerequisites:
The vCenter and ESX servers for the virtual machines must be added to Resiliency Platform at the required data centers.
Ensure that all the ESXi servers of the cluster belong to the same VMware data center.
VMware Tools must be installed on the virtual machines.
Every asset selected to be in the resiliency group should have a NetBackup policy of type VMware.
NetBackup primary server should be online in the respective data centers.
The vCenters or ESX servers for the selected assets should be configured in NetBackup primary server.
There should be at least one backup schedule meeting the RPO defined in the service objective.
Ensure that the datastore on the recovery data center has enough storage capacity.
Ensure that the virtual machine and its virtual disks reside on datastores of type VMFS or NFS.
If a virtual machine has more than one ethernet adapter, then all of them should have either static IP configuration or DHCP IP configuration. A mix of static and DHCP IP configuration is not supported on the same virtual machine.
On Linux virtual machines, ensure that all the virtual NICs attached to the selected virtual machines have a valid IP address. The IP address may be assigned statically or via DHCP protocol.
If a virtual machine is backed-up by one or more NetBackup policies, and if none of the policies have a definite frequency, then RPO cannot be defined for the virtual machine. While creating a resiliency group using such virtual machines, choose a Service Objective with RPO = Any.
Ensure that the selected virtual machines are backed up using only one NetBackup primary server which is configured in Resiliency Platform.
Make sure the same folder structure exists in the vCenter server at DR site as the folder structure for the virtual machines in the vCenter server at source data center. The VMware data center name may be different in the folder path.
Resiliency Platform restores the virtual machines in the root resource pool of the selected ESX or clusters. Make sure that the root resource pool has sufficient resources.
Only VMware virtual machines that are being backed up by continuous NetBackup policy or protection plan can be protected by Resiliency Platform. Clients backed up using a one-time backup policy are not supported.
Note:
Resiliency Platform maintains information about only a limited number of backup images of the virtual machines in any resiliency group. The number of images depends on the RPO defined in the service objective applied to the resiliency group. Typically, Resiliency Platform maintains information of images that are later than 10 * RPO from current time. Resiliency Platform purges information about older images every night. The default RPO considered for resiliency groups created using a service objective with un-monitored RPO is 30 days. Thus, Resiliency Platform maintains information about backup images within the last 300 days for the virtual machines in the resiliency group.
