How capacity licensing works
NetBackup automatically uses this data-gathering method if the policy type supports accurate licensing. The licensing fees for the use of NetBackup are based on the total number of Front-End Terabytes (FETBs) protected by NetBackup. Front-End Terabyte Calculation is a way of determining the total terabytes of data NetBackup protects. One FETB is 1 TB of protected data. The data can either be on clients or devices where the software is installed or where the software is used to provide backup functionality.
The data is gathered and then stored in the NetBackup database. If multiple backup copies are created, only the first copy is considered.
The nbdeployutil utility uses accurate licensing or image headers in the NetBackup catalog to determine the terabytes of data that NetBackup protects. Any partial terabyte of data is rounded up to the next whole terabyte. The final total is the sum of the FETBs for each client or each policy combination that the analyzer examines. The utility measures the actual data protected.
The accurate licensing method provides faster performance of the nbdeployutil tool to gather and generate capacity licensing report.
For backup image header, if a policy type is not yet supported for the accurate licensing method, this method is used. This method is also used for NetBackup 8.0 and earlier clients.
To report on protected data with accurate licensing, a NetBackup host or client must have a valid certificate to securely connect with the primary server so that nbdeployutil can successfully generate a report.
For information on security certificates, see the NetBackup Security and Encryption Guide.
Note:
In a multi-primary scenario, only capacity based license types are supported.
The following factors affect capacity licensing:
Multiple policies of the same type that protect the same data
The agent that is used to perform the backup
