About NetBackup for Oracle backups

You can perform different types of backups using NetBackup. Backups can be run automatically by using the schedules that you determine, or you can run a backup manually. The following table describes these methods of running a backup.

Automatic backups

When the NetBackup scheduler invokes a schedule for an automatic backup, the NetBackup for Oracle backup shell scripts run as follows:

  • In the same order as they appear in the file list

  • On all clients in the client list

The NetBackup for Oracle backup shell scripts start the database backup by running the rman command.

When the backup is started through NetBackup, RMAN performs error checking. The rman command generates an error if it considers a command invalid, but it allows any of the commands it typically considers valid to proceed. When you specify the wrong script file name, you can start an unintended operation.

Manual backups

You can use the NetBackup server software to manually run an automatic backup schedule for the Oracle policy. For more information, see the NetBackup Administrator's Guide, Volume I.
